Self Evaluation Showcase December 2013
I responded
to the stimuli “Dances through the eras" by having the era of dance as 1980/90’s old skool hip hop and
1920’s rock and roll. I researched by using photos of famous people such as “Will
Smith” from Fresh Prince Bel-Air and using the idea of how he was standing in
the photo. I also researched into the 1990's popular music such as Vogue (Madonna), as well I researched into old objects and I came up with the idea of a basketball , basketball was first played in 1891. I additionally researched TV programs from the 1990's and came up with Pokemon Tom and Jerry Mr bean Full House Kennan and Kel Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Sabrina the Teenage Witch and Fresh Prince of Bel Air and researched styles of dance and old skool hip hop on you tube as I had never done the style of dance before.
We also used
the dance improvisation workshops to help create choreography this was by
using;Choreographic principles , stillness- at the start of the duet when turning over music channels, falling and elevation when doing handstand lift at the end of the routine in rock and roll section. We also used, climax(lifts), repetition on movements this was by using motif development, contact, symmetry and movement components (falling, turning, elevation, gestures, travelling and stillness). We also used formations which helped us with floor patterns this was by me going to different
places of the stage (formations) and performing in different directions to the audience. I
found that the workshops with Kat and Chloe were very useful and helpful for the duet but
the one that helped us out the most was when Chloe did a workshop on performance skills as this was on of the weakest area's in our duet and Kat did a workshop on responding to a picture and by turning on random music this
was us being spontaneous to the music stimuli . Riley and myself found that the workshop responding to music stimuli was helpful to create moves in our duet that we both liked. We used alot of contrasting dynamics such as force and flow when moving the shoulder short fast and stained and speed/moving the feet quickly. We also found that the workshop on structures was very helpful for us, it gave us the idea of using narrative (ABC) to tell a story. We used the idea of a telly and flicking back music channels of different ears of dance.
The duet developed by adding in old skool hip hop moves and contact work, we also developed floor patterns to make the choreography more enjoyable to watch.
We also worked on the structure of the dance as ABC telling a story, we have came up with the idea of having the a sound of someone turning the channels of music on a telly and using stillness when turning the telly over this would be repeated twice throughout the dance , responding to the idea we had on our dance planner. .In the rehearsal process for developing our choreography was hard and changeling this was because one of us got easily distracted and found it hard to focus with other people in the studio. We developed our duet this was by a motif that was carried throughout the dance and this was by having a motif (basketball move) witch will be developed varied and repeated. We developed our routine for the duet this was by adding a climax and this was by adding in lifts in the rock and roll section and adding levels so it wasn't boring for the audience to watch at one level dance this was by also having floor patterns using the space and a short floor section in our old skool hip hop routine. Our strongest strength was performance and facial expressions to our performance. We ensured we applied contrasting dynamics by making sure we had fast and slow and fluid and staccato movements and motifs throughout the duet this was by at the beginning of the routine motif of basketball having short phrases that were short and sharp. We then had slow movements such as when bouncing basketball
Throughout the choreographic work process with other performers i found that it was helpful this was by using other peoples idea's/styles and getting reflection on how our duet was going and what needed changing to the routine throughout the times we performed in class time. The students in the class were very supportive to one another and giving ideas on how you could improve on the dance and structure to it as well. On show day everyone was cheering everyone on this made me want to do it one more time after the last show was finished.
We had two shows in one day this was very good as it gave me the confidence i needed for the last show performing to family and friends this is a weak part for me as i panic and forget things when i perform in-front of people i know. I found that the duet went well and was the sharpest i had danced in a long time. We had a good effect on both audiences this was by people recognising the music and nodding there to it such as they all knew "Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air" and cheering on when doing the big lift at the end of the routine of Rock 'n' Roll by "Candy man" We also had them clapping to the beat of the music this helped as it got my performance going and my confidence as I got more into the music . We also had a strength this was by connecting to the audience when switching the music channels and using facial expressions and pointing to them when they knew what era they were back into. Our weakness for our duet was using the floor space more and using different facings/formations.
Our choreography changed from our dance planner slightly this was by adding a different era of dance into our choreography, this was a style we both liked rock 'n' roll this reminded me of a fun and energetic dance witch would connect well with audience as it is very eye catchy and that you want to watch more of it. We researched into rock 'n' roll and got some inspirations of youtube this was Rockabilly dance from lindy hop. We stuck the idea "Fresh Prince of Bel-Air" this gave us the idea of Old Skool Hip Hop as it had a beaty tempo to the music and this was also a style we both liked, We also had to research into the style of dance as I had never really done the style of dance only in class time and this was when i came up idea of a basketball as this was a old object in the 1890's as i thought the beat sounded like basketballs. We also stuck to the structure of the dance this was ABC narrative telling a story.

To improve my own practice for the future I will improve on the amount of times I practise the routine and not leave it to the last minute and if any props were to be used in the routine I should start using them from the moment I make up a routine. I will also deal with problems such as when my partner is not in the studio,i shall make up some new moves for the duet or go over and over it till it is of perfection standard .
